Cause the Russian grappler is ready to start planting in season 2!
In season 1, it was no secret that Zangief was in his own tier of bad. With the plethora of buffs to the muscle-bound character in season 2, many people are starting to see Zangief in a positive light. A recent interview with Diago ‘The Beast’ Umehara, one of the longest active players in the competitive fighting scene, put Zangief as one of the characters he could see becoming top tier in the future.
While it is still too soon to solidly implement tier lists, Daigo’s opinion should not be taken lightly.
Some of the main buffs to Zangief that may have brought upon this change of opinion are followed;
- Many of his normals are more positive on block
- Can combo into lariat more easily
- More stun off of Siberian Express
- The space between Zangief and his opponent after Screw Pile Driver is less, making it easier to continue pressure

It will be interesting to see how pros like Stupendous and Snake_Eyez take advantage of the recent buffs to the grappler.
While it may be too soon to say for sure, things are looking good for the Red Cyclone in season 2.
