A recent interview with Ono by IGN gives hope to Street Fighter fans that the newest game in the Street Fighter series has a chance of being released to other gaming platforms.
Here is the orginial quote by Ono in the interview.
“If this title sells extremely well we’ll consider it,” Ono said. “We put a lot of thought into how this can be fully enjoyed on the Nintendo Switch, so for the time being it’s only going to be on Switch.”
The implications of the quote could potentially be huge for the FGC (fighting game community). If the game were to be released to other platforms like the PS4 or PC, would this open the game up to competitive play?
The game is getting a balance update to bring it into the 21st century which could raise some interest. In the same article by IGN, Ono notes that, “The balance for the original Street Fighter II Turbo in the ’90s was OK for that time, but whether it matches the times now is a bit questionable,” Ono explained. “We didn’t want to do a complete overhaul, because then the situation would be, ‘Well, why don’t you just play Street Fighter 5?’ We wanted to keep some sense of what it was like playing in the 90s, but also retune it to match the era now”. This shows that Capcom is not simply putting an HD version of the game out.
With this in mind, if enough people become interested in the game Capcom could possibly start supporting the competitive scene of the game. While the decision to sell the game solely on Nintendo Switch in the beginning might not make this likely, it is certainly not impossible.
Another aspect of the probability of this happening to look out for depends on the success of the Nintendo Switch console as a whole. If it fails, I wouldn’t imagine Ultra Street Fighter doing very well in sales.
On the other hand, if Nintendo Switch does fail, it might give Capcom an incentive to release the game to other platforms.
Another question to ponder would be if Capcom were to sell the game on other platforms, would it be like Street Fighter V where only the Ps4 and PC would get it?
What do you hope will happen with Ultra Street Fighter II: The Final Challengers?
