When’s Mahvel? According to the recent news regarding EVO 2017, there is a chance that Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 will not be in EVO 2017.
UMvC3 is competing with 8 other games to claim the last spot in EVO 2o17.
If UMvC3 does not make it EVO 2017 would mark the first time that a Marvel vs. Capcom game was not in the fighting game tournament since EVO’s creation in 2002.

It is rather odd, besides the game being a mainstay in the tournament up to this year, that the franchise did not 100% get in. The game is fairly popular, even spawning one of the primary FGC memes, When’s Mahvel?. It is unfortunate the game does not have the staying power of Super Smash Bros. Melee, but it still has aged better than most other fighting games, including the ones in competition with UMvc3 to be in EVO 2017. The only exception might be Killer Instinct, but that game has only been out since 2013 and is still being updated.
In addition, the 6-year-old fighting game recently got ported the the Playstation 4 which rekindled some interest in the fighting game. The PC and Xbox One will also be getting a port of the game and those will be coming on March 7th. So clearly Capcom cares about the game enough to port it into the new generation of systems and steam and they think that enough people will buy it to make it worth doing (I certainly am getting it the instant it comes out for PC). This will also hopefully continue to rekindle the interest in a game I thoroughly enjoy.
Wanting the game to be in EVO is not just about how great a fighting game UMvC3 is. I am also thinking about the future of the franchise. Having UMvC3 in such a large tournament would bring more attention to the series. The next game in the Marvel vs. Capcom series, Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite, would certainly benefit from the hype of EVO since the game is scheduled to come out a few months after EVO is over.
With such a long wait in between the two games, I would not be surprised if casual players did not even know MvC:I exists. EVO is the perfect place to rekindle interest in the fighting game franchise after its slip from the public in the past years.
One last note. While I clearly want UMvC3 to win, I have nothing against the other games competing for the spot. I am glad they are getting a chance to get some exposure. The only reason I am not supporting one of the more indie games, or brand new ones like Arms, is that I think UMvC3 should 100% be in the tournament and it is almost a crime it wasn’t included by default.
If I had to choose another game besides UMvC3 my top 3 choices, in no particular order, would be;
- Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo
- Skull Girls
While I would be disappointed if UMvC3 did not get into EVO, I am sure whatever game gets the spot will bring the hype.
